King Michael supports Prince Radu’s participation in the presidential elections

23 apr. 2009

Romanians,

My family and I lived half a century in exile, followed by a further decade of restrictions here in our own country. These years have been tough for us, and in many aspects, tougher still for Romania. The hopes and expectations of all Romanians have been smashed one by one for more than six decades. However, our entire life has been spent in the service of our country, and our dearest wish was, and indeed remains the same, to see Romania rich, proud, influential and respected within Europe and on the world stage.

During recent years, I have carefully considered proposals of becoming involved in Romania’s State development. Intellectuals, political experts and people from all walks of life and generations have proffered ideas. I have always been faithful, and taken great care of our country, have never forced situations, or tried to take personal advantage of the twists and turns of recent history or events. The proper action for the country comes only at  the proper moment. I think that moment has come.

Through the participation of a member of the Royal Family in democratic elections to elect the Head of State, my family wishes to  attempt to unite and rehabilitate the Romania of today through dedicated service to our nation and her people.

I have every confidence that Prince Radu can shoulder this important responsibility and this noble goal.

It is not a usual thing for a member of the Royal House to take part in such an event, but history has confronted me with many unusual and challenging situations, which I managed to overcome successfully.

Romania is experiencing hard times. We cannot play with the State and her institutions and threaten the destiny of a nation.

I call on all of you to support this important step  for Romania, for your country needs you to be united in solidarity, to be generous and responsible.

Romanians need, indeed must, regain respect in Italy, Spain, and throughout the continent of Europe, as well as in America and the world at large. More than ever, however, we must regain our self-respect here at home.

In this difficult year, together we can give Romania hope.

So help us God!

Michael R
